WW1 Memorial

by Alex Morris

Hi,

I am new to the forum. I have recently researched the history of the (approx. 120) servicemen commemorated on the Inverkeithing WW1 memorial. I have researched the units they served in and where they are buried/commemorated (and visited some 70 of them to pay my respects). I have been unable to find any details on the below men. If any member of this forum has any information on one of them I would appreciate if you could share this with me:

George Borthwick, James F Borthwick, James A Anderson, David Brown, Arthur E Bryant, Charles Burnett, John Charlton, Crawford Cooper, William Donaldson, Cecil Horne, William H Kay, David Macnamara, James McGovern, Andrew McKay, Alexander McLean, Alexander Nicolson, John Petrie, William Pryde, Francis Smith, Robert Thornton, William Thornton.

Kind Regards,

A Morris

I am very interested in your research concerning the WW1 Memorial, Inverkeithing.  Can't help much with the Borthwick names you mention, although my mum has a few photos of later Borthwick men, think there is some family connection.  I'm interested as I enjoy family history, my local connection being Syme, Morris, Innes.

Would love to hear more about your research. My grandmother's (living) uncle was Robert Thomson born 1892 in Inverkeithing and killed in Ypres in 1917. Apart from this, we know very little about him. Interested to hear if you know any more. My gradnmother emigrated to Australia at the age of 3, so is keen to find out anything at all about her Scottish roots.

Clare,

I have some details for Robert Thomson. He was born in Hillend in about 1893. In the 1901 census he is recorded as living in Inverkeithing with his father (Alexander), mother (Mary), elder sisters Mary and Maggie and younger sisters (Janet and Helen) - 4 sisters !!. Robert joined the Royal Garrison Artillery and was serving with the 4th Siege Battery serving in the Ypres Salient. He must have been an accomplished artillery man as he reached the rank of serjeant. Unfortunately, he was killed in action on the 1st September 1917. He is buried in the Divisional Collecting Post cemetery near Ypres. I have visited his grave to pay my respects, photo attached.

Rgds,

Alex

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
