New Scotland boss Levein's days at Inverkeithing High remembered
3 Mar 2010Born in Dunfermline, Craig attended Inverkeithing High School, where he was part of a team with another future Scotland international, Gordon Durie. During his schooldays he appeared for Dalgety Bay, Leven Royals and Inverkeithing under-16s as well as the school team, where he lifted the 1980-81 Fife Cup as captain of the High School under 16s.
Craig is remembered at the school as a bright pupil, and good at English as well as football - as his former English teacher Hamish Ferguson recalls here in this feature on the Sun website.
After signing for junior side Lochore Welfare, Craig signed with Cowdenbeath before moving on to Hearts, where he won the SPFA Young Player of the Year Award. During his career at Hearts he won 16 caps for Scotland, and was a member of the squad for the 1990 World Cup in Italy.
After retiring in 1995, Craig managed Cowdenbeath, Hearts, Leicester City, Raith Rovers and Dundee United, before becoming Scotland manager in December 2009.
So good luck to Craig and the national side, starting with his first game in charge this week against the Czech Republic at Hampden - former school friends, teachers and everyone in Inverkeithing will be watching and cheering on a real local success story.
