Proposed Houisng Development in Spencerfield

by wayne morris

I do hope that the proposed housing development in Spencerfield is not thwarted by those with a little power but no vision.  If the Community Council sees this as an opportunity for the town and embraces and supports the ASP proposal, its surely a plan that cannot fail and the town can look forward to something that we can all be proud of.  Here's hoping!!

A.S.P. dose not care about Inverkeithing they only want easy money

ask most locals and we can show them where to build homes in Inverkeithing and not just in the bay

Paul McAndrew says

As myrna said they are only interested in money.

As do you have any idea on the impact of 400 houses would have on the local area other than the bait of being offered a new sports centre. The high school is at breaking point and isn't really able to take on many more pupils, the road network at this end of Inverkeithing is not large enough to cope with the additional flow of traffic if this stupid proposal gets the go ahead.

It has been turned down once before as it because the fields there are the last barrier between Inverkeithing and Dalgety Bay. Again as myrna has said there are far more place to build new housing in Inverkeithing or on the edge of Inverkeithing than down Spencerfield.

Alexander Morgan says

Years ago people lost their job because a new quarry road was not allowed  what's changed.

There are places in Inverkeithing now council gardens that house used to stand on build their.

James Todd says

Having lived in a house over looking these fields it would be a waste to see this area turned into housing. Get Inveresk to clean up the mill along with the owners of the scrap yard. make them pay for cleaning the bay they have poluted for years and build a water front estate, with affordable housing. The latest fires show that no one is taking responsability for this area.

david smith says

I dont see the problem with this proposal at all.  We moved here 5 years ago and although a new development in the old paper mill would be great it is not going to happen till the scrap yard goes and I am not sure that will happen anytime soon.  As I understand it, the Alf Stewart Trust is set up to arrange development within the fife area and profits from these developments get ploughed back into the community.  Surely its a no-brainer isnt it?  If the diehard rejectors manage to block it and the Alf Stewart Trust pull out of Inverkeithing those who were succesful in blocking it should be prepared to hang their heads in shame when another developer who is truly just in it for its shareholders get permission a few years down the line to build houses.  I really cant see a sports academy being on the agenda then.  There is a real chance here for the town. I do hope we dont let it slip from our grasp.

Andy Holland says

This is all Inverkeithing needs. More housing on the outskirts of the town with more people bringing their cars into the railway station area. Fife Council will probably give it the green light though as the charges for parking and extra council tax will bring them revenue.

It's greed at the expense of a community.

jenny bell says

Hmmm, sorry but I tend to agree with both Wayne and David.  If a development is going to happen (and in this case it probably will) then take my advice and negotiate with the developers from the outset.  That way the community can have a real input to what will be developed.  Your alternatives are to fight what will probably be a losing battle and end up with no say in it whatsoever.  Oh and Andy, whilst I have not seen any plans for the 400 houses I would guess that A) there will be parking within the new streets in spencerfield and B) The residents wont feel the need to take their cars the 500 metres walk to the train station so I dont think your argument re parking charges  has much substance.

Why is everyone so scared of change and why to they  try to mask this fear by suggesting developments on land this is not suitable when in truth they want the status quo to prevail?

graham mcleod says

I am 16 years old  and have lived here since I moved here when I was 10.  I want to stay here when I get a job and leave my mum and dads house but theres no chance of that if theres no new houses built here. If builders build afordable houses for people like me as well as bigger houses for familys then I would want to stay.  I'm not really into sport so the sports academy doesnt matter to me but it will do for all the kids that live here in the future

Paul McAndrew says

David the problem is the current infrastructure in Inverkeithing cannot support the additional housing anywhere within the town. Doesn't matter where it is the costs will be far more than anything ASP claim we will get back.

As who upgrades the High School to support the extra pupils? Same for the primary School? The roads? The list goes on and you can be sure it would be us paying for it not any developer.

As we stand at present the Council have already blocked a proposed development at Spencerfield due to it being the only divider between Dalgety Bay and Inverkeithing to prevent us becoming one large sprawl just separated by the woods.

Only reason we are hearing from ASP now is they are trying the carrot routine now going but if you let us build this we will let this sports complex go ahead as a sweetner.

So sorry we aren't going to hang our heads in shame if this new proposal gets blocked as Fife Council have already said this land is not for building on last year. Nothing has changed since then bar the new proposal trying blackmail saying you wont get this sports complex if we cant build here.

paul frazer says

What the doubters have to ask themselves is "is this a battle we can win?"  Ultimately, if the planners want this development to happen then it probably will.  If it is going to happen then the people of Inverkeithing have a real chance to negotiate with the developer from day one of the plan to achieve someting that is both needed and wanted in the town.  No-one can possibly suggest that the Sports facility is not a real boost but that doesn't have to be the end of it.  There is an opportunity to negotiate where the access road goes, what style and size of housing, implications for wildlife etc etc.  This will only be possible if you negotiate with the developer early on.  This town needs regenerated and if it takes 400 houses on an unused field to be the catalyst for this then so be it.  They have my vote.

What I am struggling to understand is why there appears to be so much opposition.  Those of us that were not born here we can maybe see what is lacking in the town.  Those that have never lived anywhere else should perhaps ask themselves why in truth the best things about Inverkeithing right now are the roads leading out. For now, there are few houses in Inverkeithing worth more than £200k. This is a chance for that to change and for some quality housing to be built. Do we want to be compared with a run down town like Lochgelly or should we not aspire to our near neighbours in Dalgety Bay and North Queensferry who have embraced development which in turn has allowed their communities to blossom.

richard taylor says

what the council should do is knock down the flats in frazer avenue and barr cresent get rid of the wasters that live there re house the ones that are not junkies or alchoholics and build houses there. that area of inverkeithing give us locals a bad rep. ive lived in the divit all my life. at the moment working in france and when i mention inverkeithing to anyone from scotland who come on holiday they say fraz ave or barr cersent straight away. they dont know that theres more to inverkeithing they think its a place to dump junkies pedophiles and alchololics

SHEILA PATERSON says

I  THINK IT SO STUPID TO BUILD HOUSES IN THE FEILD NEXT TO SPENCERFEILD WHEN FRASER AVENUE IS LYING HALF EMPTY THEY SHOULD KNOCK IT DOWN AND THEN THER WOULD BE PLENTY ROOM FOR HOUSES THERE.IF THE COUNCIL CHOSE TO BUILD ON SPENCERFEILD,THE TREES WOULD BE THE ONLY THING SEPERATING INVERKEITHING AND DALGETY BAY ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

David Robertson says

I agree with Sheila - there are plenty of area's in Inverkeithing that are crying out for re-development! The enviromental impact on developing 400 houses on green land is a daft idea!

Besides everyone should be thinking of re-developing the houses/flats overlooking the town & fraser avenue.

My personal opinion would be to demolish "Fraz Ave" & build properties like the new ones on "old Barr Cres" but with more shared ownership - because at the end of the day people will take care of their surroundings if they owned part of their property unlike some of the residents that are on that street at present!
